Top-Notch Mac and Cheese at Jack Allen's

March 14, 2013

When you're just a kid, one of the best childhood foods are usually combinations of two strong elements of your eyes and tummy, for example - peanut butter & jelly, milk & cereal, or ice cream & whatever vegetable you were required to eat (before you could get your dessert).   But perhaps above all other kid-food duos, macaroni & cheese has grown into a full-fledged adult entree that’s ordered at fancy restaurants with only a minor tinge of embarrassment.

How can anyone NOT enjoy an amazing Mac-n-Cheese meal?  If you're a vegetarian, it's perfect.  If you're a vegan, there are many options for you.  Mac-n-Cheese is 'where it's at' when you stomach is craving anything.  It's almost the perfect comfort food.  Well, there's one spot in Austin that clearly offers the best Mac-n-Cheese available - Jack Allen's Kitchen.

I live near highway 71, so I visited their TX-71 location last Friday night.  And although parking was a pain, eventually I found a spot.
I walked in around 7:30 pm and this place was packed. The wait for table of 4 was 45 minutes (I highly recommend calling in a day in advance to reserve a table).   Once seated, we started with appetizers - Quesdillas and Blue Crab. I ordered the dinner special of smoked Salmon, with Coleslaw it was amazing. The only thing I didn't like that it was deep fried, I wouldn't have got it if I knew it was served in that way...but hey, no complaints.

Now...as for Jack Allen's Mac-n-Cheese, after we all paid the bill and were about to leave, I ordered some Mac-n-Cheese to go.  The smell in the car was driving me crazy all the way home.  I knew the moment I walked in the door, I was 'sampling' my order.  by 11 pm, my to-go order was all gone.  One word - superb. The five cheese mac and cheese and chicken is nothing short of amazing.  It's a game changer.   I was scraping the bottom of the bowl.

Jack Allens is a favorite of mine in Austin...and I can't wait to go back for that mac and cheese!
