Well, it's about 36 hours before Christmas is here and I was hankering for something truly spectacular and simple. While I was driving home from work, I thought to myself, "A slice great apple pie would be great right about now." So I hopped online and let Facebook do it's magic. Within 10 minutes, I had multiple recommendations from friends and about 75% of the messages included the worlds 'Moonshine' and 'Pie' in the same message. Allowing Google to do the work for me, I found one spot - Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill on Red River St.
Is this not the greatest pie ever? Of course it is. I cannot begin to tell you how yummy this place is. Anything with fresh fruit they make is fabulous. For me, the standard by which all pie is judged is Cherry. Finding a good Cherry Pie is l like finding the holy grail, only with less incense. This Cherry Pie ranks amongst the best I've ever had - tart, not sweet, with tons of huge, plump, delicious Cherries and a flaky crust to die for. If you want this one go early. I've been shut out of the Cherry on several occasions because they were sold out by the time I got there. Skip Church - get to the pie shop in time for the Cherry.
Having never been there before, I didn't know what to expect. So I sat down and said "I'm seeking one thing - Your Apple Pie.' Five minutes later, it arrived. Amazing.
First of all, the 'Skillet apple pie' was big enough for 4 stuffed people. It’s a pie that feels authentically rustic, tried, and true — the sort of pie you could imagine the family from Little House on the Prairie eating. The dough for the shortening-based crust is mixed by hand, for maximum flakiness. The result is pretty much perfect: golden pastry that gives way to sublimely plump cubes of buttery spiced fruit (the clove comes through especially well), which are unusually easy to spear or scoop up with a fork. Great-grandma knew best — but for nontraditionalists, I'm told that other pies are offered that tend to provide a sugary crumb topping that’s laced with cardamom to balance out its sweetness.
Without a doubt, the best slice of apple pie I have ever had in Austin.
