In the event you know don’t what a Tandoori chicken is, it’s a chicken dish prepared by roasting chicken marinated in yogurt and spices in a tandoor, a cylindrical clay oven. The dish originated from the Indian subcontinent and is popular in many other parts of the world.
And if you want the best Tandoori Chicken dish in Austin, it’s at the Clay Pit. Tandoori Chicken is one of their specialties and the volume of food for the value is well worth it.
I was tempted by the Tandoori Chicken because of the fantastic online reviews, so I did. I also decided to go with the tried and true choice of Delhi Ka Butter Chicken which came with garlic naan. The garlic naan was warm, buttery, nice and fluffy but there wasn't a ton of garlic taste to it. AMAZING.
A little about our dining experience(s) as a group - We were a group of 7 trying to eat around 7 PM on a winter weekend when we first visited Clay Pit. The wait was long and the restaurant was so crowded that we had to wait outside. Still, the food was good enough to draw us back a second time.
This time, we arrived at 4:00 PM on a weekday, which is when Happy Hour starts. Some websites will say Clay Pit is closed until 5:00 PM, but that's for the dinner menu. If you prefer a buffet, the cost is $9.50 and had a great array of choices. They bring out free naan bread btw! My favorite is the tikka masala. The mango kheer was okay - it is like a mango rice pudding.
Our server was WONDERFUL though. He filled our water before we even knew to ask him. Was very nice and provided great service. Also, the restaurant ambience was really nice as well. The dessert wasn't as great as the rest of the meal, we got the kulfi, it tasted delicious, but it wasn't very easy to eat with the crisp that it came with and kept falling off the plate. I'm definitely going back, and I definitely recommend it!
The next time you’re on Guadalupe St., pay the Clay Pit a visit!
