My best friend, in the WHOLE world, became a vegan about three years ago. And it's tough to find a spot that we can sit down together, dine and enjoy the food as well as the conversation. Well, we found one spot in Austin that makes us both very happy - Counter Culture.
It's located at the 2300 block of East Cesar Chavez St., across the street from Waldos Photos.
And since I became a fan of this spot, I took advantage of it when my sister came to visit. She eats a vegan diet so I had her decide where we we're going to pick up food from for lunch and she chose Counter Culture. (and as I said, I'm not vegan), but I'm happy to try new things.
Recently, I ordered the gluten free Mac and cheese and we shared the nacho plate. I was incredibly surprised. This has to be some of the best Mac and cheese and queso I've ever had including non-vegan options. If I didn't know it was vegan, I could have sworn everything was normal dairy-based. I was shocked to find the queso that is absolutely delicious was made from sweet potatoes. I've tried vegan cheese products and meals in the past and I can't say I'm that into them. There's always an intense nut flavor or the consistency just isn't right but Counter Culture managed to avoid both issues. The queso was a great, smooth consistency and the taste was impeccable.
Let me make sure you get this - The Mac and cheese was amazing! I couldn't taste any over powering cashew taste and every part of the dish was delicious (especially love the breadcrumbs)! I will definitely be eating here way more often!!
Hands down, the best vegan comfort food in Austin. Organic & Local when possible. Unprocessed with plenty of raw and soy and gluten free options. Never microwaved. Daily specials and weekend brunch. Adorable little dining area as well.
