If you haven’t experienced a Tiramisu in your life, you need to start giving it a shot. A Tiramisu is a coffee-flavored Italian dessert. It is made of ladyfingers dipped in coffee, layered with a whipped mixture of eggs, sugar and mascarpone cheese, flavored with cocoa. The recipe has been adapted into many varieties of cakes and other desserts.
In my opinion, the very best Tiramisu is a rich-flavored Tiramisu. It needs to provide a deep coffee flavor and a fantastic aftertaste of cocoa (or chocolate). And although I’ve found 9 different spots in Houston that pride themselves on an amazing Tiramisu, the BEST of them all is a café named ‘French Riviera.’ Also, a large portion is not ideal. A fantastic Tiramisu is a great complement to a rich, flavored coffee. A gigantic serving is more of a ‘meal’ and not a dessert. French Riviera’s portion is perfect.
When a place is this busy, the food cannot be ‘not fresh.’ We tried an omelet, a quiche, a pain au chocolat, a croissant, coffee, and they were all excellent and fresh. The service was great and fast. Only thing i would improve is perhaps not sweeping the floors while people are eating. I dont believe that to be very sanitary but i understand why it may need to be done. When the weather is nice, the patio would be beautiful to sit in with all the roses around. Overall recommend this place for a family breakfast or a quick one by yourself to enjoy and eat before you go to work. Don’t be intimated by how busy they are, the service is super-fast. There is also plenty of parking around. I’d like to go back and try more of the baked goods.
Apparently, it's pretty authentic since I saw actual French people there. Their coffee came with a bear on it and the pastries I had all tasted really good. It's a cute cafe! I ordered the éclair, the crème brûlée, and the flan, and did not regret any of the choices after they quickly arrived at my table. The eclair tastes fresh and its texture was very smooth. Many bakeries have "fake" eclair dough, glazed and too thin. But this place's eclair dough was obviously real, legitimate French dough. The chocolate did not overpower the rest of the pastry, unlike many "fake" eclairs. This eclair was the bomb!
Also, as a side note, we ordered the crème brûlée and found it a little bit interesting. It was very good, but in my opinion, the burnt sugar garnish was a little too thick and a little too burnt. The vanilla bean flecks were all at the bottom, but came up in my spoon if I dug a little and paid for it with wonderful flavor. Overall, it was pretty good, but could be perfect with a little bit more work.
The flan, the flan, the flan. It was delicious! And, the texture was exactly like flan's texture should be. The honey-ish maple-ish sauce (you know what I mean) was sweet but not super sugar buzz sweet. Overall, this bakery is successfully delicious. Located in the Galleria / Uptown area at the corner of Richmond Ave and Fairdale Ln.
